Blood Test for Hepatitis B
The hepatitis B virus is spread mainly through infected blood or body secretions, via sexual contact or the sharing of contaminated intravenous needles, and causes inflammation of the liver. Many people who are infected with hepatitis B do not experience noticeable symptoms; evident symptoms usually appear two to three months after infection and often mimic those of the flu. Jaundice may also be noticeable.
Most adults with acute (newly acquired) hepatitis B infections are able to eliminate the virus and are cured of infection; some cannot and have chronic infections that can lead to cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), and cancer. Chronic hepatitis B requires treatment with antiviral medication.
LabDraw's Hepatitis B Surface Antigen blood test screens for hepatitis B at one of our 4,000+ testing locations, which will administer confirmation tests if the antibodies are present. As with the tests for herpes and syphilis, the hepatitis B test can accurately detect this specific STD in 3-6 weeks from time of exposure.
