 | 1 Flask Rating for DR. SURINDER DHAWAN MD Comment: Upon arrival at Dr. Dhawan's office I explained that I had no insurance and was unfortunately unemployed. I conveyed my sense of financial distress and asked to keep the cost at the lowest part of the range ($55-$98). I was in need of antibiotics and I knew this because two days earlier I took my 8 y/o daughter to a peds clinic where she was indeed diagnosed with strep throat. In other words, I was predisposed to strep pyogenes and simply needed antibiotics. Knowing this, Dr. Dhawan ordered a WBC count test and then administered a steroid IM. This boosted the cost to $135. I explained to Dr. Dhawan that I was financially burdened, unemployed and had no health insurance. He agreed to provide me with pharmaceutical samples to ease the financial strain. upon checking out I was accosted with the $135 bill. I agreed to pay $60 and explained that I simply couldn't pay anymore. at that time I was told by Dr. Dhawan that I had to pay atleast $98 that day and could then pay the rest within two weeks. I restated my position and made a payment of $60 (the maximum amount available on my Visa Credit Card). At that time he collected the pharmaceutical samples and took them away. He then gave me three prescriptions which would have cost me $76 to have filled. I asked for the generic version and he assured me that they would not cost much. upon speaking with the pharmacist I learned that the antibiotic was all I needed to rid myself of the infection and that the other drugs were for comfort, ie. cough meds and a decongestant. I could only afford to get the antibiotic, thank God. I was extremely disappointed with the level of professionalism displayed by Dr. Dhawan. He was surely given those samples by a pharmaceutical representative for distribution to his patients and not for resale. It seem to me that a quid pro quo scenario applies here. "I could have the free meds if I paid the full amount that day. I promised to pay within two weeks and signed my name to it. Was my signature not good enough for the good doctor? I certainly hope this doesn't happen to any other patients who are not only down on their luck, but too sick to pick themselves up by their bootstraps. Shame on this greedy, greedy medical doctor. He is a disgrace to the profession and heretic to the Hippocratic Oath. Alan Gamble |
